Our seasoned instructors bring decades of jiu jitsu expertise and personalized coaching to guide each student—whether you’re just starting or competing at high levels—toward your greatest potential.
Trained in the traditional cotton uniform, Gi Jiu-Jitsu is where the art's technical roots run deepest. The fabric itself becomes a weapon — grips on the collar, sleeve, and pants open up chokes, sweeps, and control positions unique to this format. Slower and more methodical than No-Gi, Gi training builds the kind of patience, precision, and problem-solving that carries over into every style of grappling.
No-Gi jiu-jitsu is trained in a rashguard and shorts, taking cloth grips out of the equation. It's the format favored in submission grappling and the one that carries over most naturally to MMA and self-defense.
For kids, jiu-jitsu offers something few other activities can: confidence, discipline, and fitness, all built in a safe and structured environment led by instructors who specialize in working with children. We split classes into two age groups — 5 to 8 and 9 to 13 years old — so kids always train with peers at a similar stage, at times that fit into even the busiest family schedules.
At Legion Jiu Jitsu ABQ, we believe real self-defense starts in the mind before it ever shows up in the body. Our Women's Jiu-Jitsu and self-defense classes give women a proven path to building physical strength, mental resilience, and practical skills they can rely on to protect themselves when it matters most."
Our 6-month Beginner Fundamentals curriculum is where the foundation gets built. Students lock in core techniques, develop functional strength and conditioning, and gain the confidence that only comes from live, controlled sparring reps. It's the essential stepping stone connecting day-one beginners to advanced-level training.
Our Intermediate-Advanced classes guides students on the journey from blue belt all the way to black belt. Instruction comes from several high-level coaches, each bringing a distinct game and teaching style, so students walk away with a genuinely well-rounded skill set. Every instructor brings serious competition experience and teaches a modern, up-to-date approach to jiu-jitsu.

MEET OUR INSTRUCTORS
Shawn Kocab – Owner/Head Instructor
With over two decades on the mats, Shawn Kocab leads Legion Jiu Jitsu ABQ as both owner and head instructor. A first-degree black belt under the legendary Robert Drysdale — awarded in 2018 — Shawn also trained directly under MMA icon Wanderlei Silva, sharpening a fight IQ built on real competition and real coaching. His background extends well beyond Jiu-Jitsu — years of training in MMA, professional boxing, Judo, Muay Thai, Krav Maga, and tactical weapons work round out a skill set few instructors can match. That depth of experience is what Shawn brings to every class, helping students build the same discipline, resilience, and confidence that’s defined his own 20-year journey in the arts.
Jose Barraza – No-Gi Instructor
Black belt 2nd degree in Brazilian jiu jitsu
Awarded black belt in February 2020 from Roberto Godoi. Head of G13BJJ
I started training in July of 2012 and quickly got addicted to Brazilian jiu jitsu. My first training experience was in Phoenix Arizona. After I got out of the United States Air Force I needed a way to stay in shape that was functional and also fun. I progressed quickly through the ranks earning the black belt in 7 1/2 years. Started teaching as a blue belt in jiu jitsu in 2015. Been teaching more professionally since 2018
